The Whalers opened their season with a dramatic 6-3 win, in front of a hostile Icebreakers home crowd. Scoring quickly and often, the adept Whalers quickly silenced the Icebreaker fan-base, who found themselves heading to the exits early when the score was to bigfor the Icebreakers to overcome.
But as the team celebrated their undefeated season, the Whalers remain without a sponsor. With reported talks ending with such big names as Bauer, CCM, Nike and Gatorade, the Whalers are remaining silent when it comes to the sponsorships still on the table.
"I play hockey," remarked John 'Youngblood' Tenaglin, when asked about the sponsorship saga. "I don't do sponsorships, I play hockey. I leave that [expletive] to the pencil pushers in the front office. All I want is a win and lots and lots of ice-cold beer! And chicks too...I really dig chicks and beer..."
Jared O'Connel, the teams attorney had this to say;
"I can neither confirm, nor deny any on-going or past disussions with sponsors for the Whalers. What I can tell you is that the Whalers are open for discussion about sponsorship, but it has to be with the RIGHT sponsor. At this time I have no further comment. "
It looks like the Whalers are off to an impressive Winter Season, but unless a deal comes through in the coming weeks, it looks like the Whalers will be on their own.
