Provo owners Bruno and Nick, sweetened their offer to the Walpole Whalers organization, and have now purchased the rights to sponsor the team. With this landslide purchase, the Walpole Whalers will now become the Provo Liquor Penguins.
A key part of their amended offer was keeping the Whalers in New England, and to rename the team to the Provo Liquor Penguins. The new logo features a very mean and angry penguin, which should instill fear in the Penguin's opponents.
Although many of the details behind the sponsorship remain sealed, what is known is that the amount behind the deal was ‘significant’.
“This is what we have been waiting for,” commented Chris Eighmy from his home in Wrentham. “We have been looking for a sponsorship that would provide a foundation for this hockey team, and thankfully Provo Liquor has graciously picked up our sponsorship.”
A source close to both sides provided some light to the final sponsorship deal:
1) There was a promise that the team would remain in New England, although a Provo Liquor lawyer said it was “possible, but not likely”, for the team to be moved to Canada in the future.
2) The team will be re-franchised to the Provo Liquor Penguins, with new jerseys in the coming weeks.
3) All players for the Penguins will be able to buy beer both ‘before’ and ‘after’ the games, depending on store hours.
“We are very excited,” Bruno said during a recent phone interview. “We look forward to building this franchise, and making the Provo Liquor Penguins a championship caliber team year after year.”
This partnership marks the end of a very long and difficult road for the Whalers, who had been discussing a sponsorship for the past six months.
“I’m just happy to be on this club,” Tragakis responded from his car, as he was leaving the Iorio Arena. “The Provo Liquor Penguins were in a position to become one of the premier teams of the league. With the financial backing and the powerful management and executive presence of Provo Liquors, aside from my skating ability, there is no stopping us!”
